Millie Bobby Brown and her fiancé Jake Bongiovi have been quite tight-lipped about their wedding plans thus far, but they have dropped hints here and there.
The Stranger Things actress has previously stated that this was on purpose since she preferred to keep the procedure under wraps. There aren’t many opportunities in life that come around more than once. She spoke to WWD last summer about how uncomfortable it was to have everyone’s attention focused on it. Millie Bobby Brown is prepared to spill the beans on the spectacular and surprising way that Jake Bongiovi proposed over a year ago in April 2023. Brown shared fresh insights with Fallon and the live audience during her appearance on Thursday, February 29, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She emphasized her intention to keep “key moments” of her relationship private, but added that it’s “too good of a story not to tell.” The proposal took place while on vacation, so let’s get started.
Our shared love of scuba diving brought Jake and me closer. We love diving, we earned our diving permits together,” Brown explained, revealing Bongiovi told her to wake up at 8 a.m. one day on their trip to go on a dive. “I was like, ‘8 a.m., dive?’ And he’s assuring me, ‘We’re heading to the same area we usually go to.'”
Millie Bobby Brown wanted to try diving somewhere new, but Bongiovi insisted. When the couple went in the sea, Bongiovi handed her a shell. “I turn it over and it’s a ring. And I glanced at him and he was like…” The actor reproduced her fiancé’s facial expression, given they were underwater and couldn’t really converse. He gave her a thumbs up and she gave him a “okay” gesture in return. “And I believe it was underwhelming, but we freaked out,” she chuckled.
It gets better. “He puts the ring on my hand and as I go to show him, the ring falls off my finger, plummets so fast, it was like a cinematic movie,” Brown recalled. “Jake threw himself so deep, the diver was like, ‘You can’t do that, like your ears… literally your brain will explode.’”
Thankfully Bongiovi made a “cinematic grab” and managed to rescue the ring. To Brown, the heroic gesture was meaningful. “It’s a reflection of who he is and I feel like we’re always going to have each other’s back and if anyone drops the ball, we got it.”
Turns out the underwater ring Bongiovi used to propose was merely a placeholder, claimed Brown. Bongiovi had really asked Brown’s mother for her ring, but her mom insisted he could “absolutely not” take it on a dive; he later delivered it to her when they were on solid ground with another proposal, this time with, you know, talking.
“When we got up on the boat he was like, ‘This is your mom’s ring and I got it from your parents,’” recounted Brown. “And it was very magical and his parents were there and we just looked so disheveled coming out from a dive.” She was right: this anecdote is too good not to tell.
